COMPREHENSION for Q46-Q50

The human skin is the largest and perhaps one of the most wonderful organs in the human body. Beside protecting our body from mechanical harm, our skin also helps to regulate our body temperature and gives us the ability to perspire. The melanin pigment found in the skin also helps screen out harmful ultra-violet radiation from the sun. Using the numerous nerve endings in our skin, we can also touch many things, and can feel pain, itch, cold, heat and a host of other sensations.

The skin on our bodies is not equally thick everywhere. The thickness varies at various parts of the body. For example, the skin on our eyelids is much thinner compared to that on our soles. Sometimes, due to continued friction or pressure on a particular part of the skin, calluses form. Calluses are tough and hard, and are commonly found on our soles, or on our fingertips if we happen to play string instruments like the guitar or the violin. Such patches of hard skin usually serve to protect, but if they form between the toes because of continued wear of badly fitted shoes, they can become very painful. In such cases, a trained specialist in foot care should be consulted to see where the problem is.

Skin is almost waterproof, hence allowing us to survive in dry air while maintaining a rather constant fluid percentage in our bodies. There are many diseases of the skin, like cancer and vitiligo, and the skin also reflects to a certain degree some illnesses that afflict the body, like chicken pox, scarlet fever and measles.

Mammalian skin supports hair growth, and in many animals, hair serves to keep the body warm in cold weather, However, the fine hair on human skin has almost no practical use. Still, hair covers almost every part of our bodies, except our soles and our palms.

So, we see that our skin is actually an all-purpose defence shield. Without our skin, even the tiniest dust particle can cause us great pain, (remember how your eyes smarted when dust got into it?) and without it, we would not know when the weather was warm, or when it was chilly. If we think about it seriously, we will realize that our skin is as vital an organ as our heart for our continued well-being and survival.
