COMPREHENSION for Q46-Q50

Did you know that the largest structure ever built by animals is not a skyscraper, but a coral reef? Coral reefs are Mother Nature’s most diverse and colourful living communities. One will never be able to find a healthy reef that is not teeming with aquatic life and colour. Yet many people still do not know much about coral reefs, and even more people do not realize that in Singapore, we also have many patches of reefs that have taken many people many months to conserve.

The coral reefs in our waters are not simply horizontal plates in the sea. One area of the reef that is relatively level and found at not very great depths in the reef flat. It is exposed at low tide, hence making it less conductive for coral growth as compared to the reef slope, which is usually a region of the reef further out ot sea than the reef flat. It has a rather steep gradient, and because of its depth is never exposed to air, Coral growth is abundant on the upper 5 or 6 metres of the reef slope, beyond which, due to the decreasing light penetration because of heavy sedimentation in our waters, coral growth is not exactly encouraged.

There are basically two kinds of living things that reside on the coral reef: the builders and the dwellers. The former are those that actively contribute to the size of a reef. The most well-know of these are the hard corals, whose limestone skeletons form the basic framework of the reef. Then there is also the red algae whose calcium salts bind coral skeletons together, and make them more resistant to erosion.

Reef dwellers can either be permanent residents of the reef, like the seashells and sea anemones, or visitors which do not live out their lives on the reef, like the Scyphozoa

Common animals to be found on our reefs are the Hydrozoa (hydroids), Scyphozoa (jellyfishes) and Anthozoa. (corals, sea anemones, sea fans and sea whips.) The first two types of animals are known for their ability to sting, hence divers and snorkelers usually avoid these creatures. Other animals like the sponge, flatworm, crab, shrimp, starfish, sea squirt and sea snake are also to be found in our waters, and of course, not forgetting thousands of colourful fishes that swarm the reefs.

Scuba diving is gaining popularity nowadays. But some inconsiderate divers step o the corals and rip off bits of coral as mementos of their diving trip, not knowing that these actions will severely harm the few remaining reefs we have. Let us all make a concerted effort to conserve and preserve what we have left, before even these disappear from our sight forever.
